Updates Part 3: Methods to our madness: Game plan, facebook... oh, and Torchbearer 4, 5 and 6 updates
In: torchbearer, News

Greetings everyone,

ome of you may have noticed more activity on our Facebook account the last month than ever before, and not necessarily related to either Torchbearer or Odd Truth in general. This is by design. After several ad campaigns on Facebook, and realizing what kind of behaviors and posts I kept seeing on my feed, I felt there was an opportunity for our Facebook page to do more than just act as a promotional tool for our products. More importantly, it could also be used as an extension of our brand and what Odd Truth stands for: quality entertainment that, at times, provides insights most unexpectedly.

Also, about a month of so ago, I discovered Reddit, which has provided a wealth of fresh and odd content.

So, for the near future, along with our blog posts, we’ll be shamelessly ripping off curating bits and pieces of Reddit (and the rest of the internet) which we find interesting and worth sharing with our fans. Why?

1) To increase brand awareness: Simply put, it’s the ability for customers to recognize your brand, company, and/or products. The final goal is that you come to expect from our Odd Truth facebook page to provide you with nuggets of entertainment (sometimes from the entertainment industry itself) you wouldn’t have thought existed before you saw them.

2) To remind our fans we are still here. Yes, as we’ve mentioned before: we suck at this whole social media thing. We’re getting better, and this was one way we thought could improve our social media presence.

Suggestions are always welcome

And now for a few updates:

April is going to be a busy month for us here at Odd Truth. Not only will we be attending C2E2, I personally will also be participating in CampNanoWriMo. NanoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) is a “an annual internet-based creative writing project that takes place every November. NaNoWriMo challenges participants to write 50,000 words of a new novel between November 1 and 30.” CampNanoWriMo seeks to do the same: provide the impetus for you to get off your butt and start writing that novel you’ve always wanted to write. The different this time around being you will be with other writers, struggling as much as you to meet the imposed deadline of writing a novel in a month. Note, this doesn’t mean you’ll have a finished novel in a month, as editing it can take longer than writing it. The point is to have completed a first draft, which is one of the hardest thing to do.

Why am I doing this, in the midst of one of our busiest months?

1) I want to write novels as well. Plain and simple. I think I have a good start of a story too that fits the novel form more than it would a comic book. More on what that story is in a bit.

2) As a company, Odd Truth has and will always be more than just comics. We are a media production company, and writing a novel has little added cost to our company (except for the time, which is a considerable investment).

So, starting on April 3rd, I’ll be providing weekly updates on Wednesdays on my progress. Thursdays, as always, will be updates on Torchbearer (and any other comic books we have in the pipeline, hint hint). As for the story I’m leaning towards writing, here is a quick summary I drafted.

In the outskirts of Partizansk, there is a small village where the Soviet Union still exists. Isolated from the rest of the world, they continue their mission: to raise children with psychic abilities into weapons of war. But when a group escapes to the land of the free, they realize that their troubles have only just begun.

As for Torchbearer, in terms of writing the scripts, production WILL NOT BE AFFECTED BY THIS. Torchbearer #4 is already written and approved by our editor, we’re finalizing the outline for Torchbearer #5 and Torchbearer #6 has been brewing since Torchbearer #1 has started that I’m concerned it’ll exceed our regular number of pages. Next week, once we’ve finalized the outline for Torchbearer #5 we’ll release the teaser descriptions for 4, 5 and 6, and create the space for them in our comic book section.

Once Torchbearer #3 is out, we’ll be compiling Torchbearer #1-3 together into a trade, which will also have some behind-the-scenes look at Torchbearer and Odd Truth, interviews with the people involved in the production, and other tidbits of the Torchbearer universe we think you’ll enjoy. For the time being, you’ll only be able to get these at comic cons. I know, it’s disappointing to hear, but I’ll go into more details next week when I highlight some of things that are necessary for you to break even as a comic book creator (yes, next week it’s a business blog post).

I think that’s all for now.

Enjoy the weekend, everyone!

Best,

-Nick D.

P.S. Oh, yeah, small thing, barely worth mentioning. We’re also writing a graphic novel. It’s designed, in part, to answer Amber Love’s question of whether there’s a good place for love stories in comics (it’s 47:23 minutes in the podcast). More details once we’re able to disclose them.
